How long is your monologue?
Paste the words you will say. You get a spoken-length range, a word count, and a check against the usual 60-second, 90-second and 2-minute audition limits.
How the timing works
This is an estimate, not a stopwatch. It counts the words you paste and divides by three acting paces. Everyday conversation is often faster. These paces already include pauses, so you do not add extra time on top. Words inside (parentheses) or [brackets] are left out, because those are usually stage directions you do not say. Character names count if you leave them in the paste.
Slow: 120 words a minute
more pauses and longer beats
Average: 140 words a minute
a typical audition pace
Fast: 160 words a minute
quicker, with fewer holds

Common questions
- How long should a monologue be?
- For most general auditions, aim for about 60 to 90 seconds, and stay under 2 minutes unless the notice asks for more. Paste the piece above and read it against the limit on your breakdown. The breakdown wins.
- How many words is a 2 minute monologue?
- At the average pace used here, 140 words a minute with pauses included, 2 minutes is about 280 words. At the slow pace, 120 words a minute, it is about 240 words. At the fast pace, 160 words a minute, it is about 320 words.
- How many words is a 1 minute monologue?
- About 140 words at the average pace, about 120 words if you speak slowly, and about 160 words if you speak quickly. Those paces already leave room for breaths and beats.
- Does this monologue timer count pauses?
- It does not time each pause. It divides your word count by three acting paces that are slower than everyday chat, so breaths and beats are already in the estimate. If the piece is full of long silences, it will run longer than the slow number. Say it once out loud and trust the slow time when you hold a lot.
- Do I need an account?
- No. The timer runs in your browser. The text is not uploaded, and you do not need to sign up.
